Asmark’s Diary
part 9: The Fae Summit
In The Doom that Came to
Amber
21st Bull 3658
A
letter arrives from Raymond in Jasper, in which he reports an inordinately
Machiavellian society. He reckons that most people are working two or three
factions at once. He gave the example of a recent incident on the border with
Chalcedony where some unspeakable entity had attacked a homestead. This, and
fictions surrounding it, had been used as a pretext for all manner of
intrigues. People involved in the intrigues also make rapid and radical changes
of position as the situation changes. He reports it is very difficult to keep
up with the changes.
On
arrival at the office of the Golden Circle, I am informed of a coup d’etat in Kashfa. It seems that Shadbourn (the noble recently installed by Benedict) has
been deposed by members of the old royal family. As Alaric has been maintaining a close interest in Begma, I send him a note about this development. He replies
suggesting that we discuss this at lunch.
After
clearing the essential business, I return to my room to embark on making a copy
of my trump of myself. The Regent currently lacks a copy.
Lunch:
Alaric and Morwaith were there. We briefly discussed the
situation in Kashfa, and speculated that the Lion of Eregnor might have been involved. Whereas this seems
entirely plausible we do not have any evidence as yet to support this. Alaric has a trump of Lyon Abbey. It may be worth
using this to investigate briefly. Alaric also reports that his great-grandfather, Archmage Clarence of Amethyst, is on the point of death. I
sent a note to the Regent to inform him of this, as Clarissa may be less
favourable to Amber than her father.
During the afternoon I
receive a trump call from Princess Bathsheba. She says that I am required at a
meeting with the Regent concerning the Golden Circle immediately after
breakfast tomorrow. It seems Bathsheba will also be attending but she does not
know what is on the agenda. The situation in Amethyst seems a likely topic.
