Morwaith’s Diary part 12: Rinaldo – Excommunications – Hall of Mirrors – Rebellion

In The Doom that Came to Amber

27th Bull 3658 – afternoon

In late afternoon the Regent sent me a missive. Alaric, he declared was an outlaw and could I see my way to excommunicating him from the Church for heresy. The lad has never been the same since our encounter with the picture bitch. He was, is still, a favourite of mine. He is one of the few of my relatives who appreciate real craftsmanship. Yet he has become appreciably damaged by contact with corrosive forces. No machine operates well with a broken part rattling around in its innards.

After mass I talked again with their lordships Grim and Henge, asking them to aid Julian who is moving against Deirdre’s forces in the city. Apparently she had taken to the Trump heresy that had marked Alaric. That Mira’s worship must be crushed within the city was in no doubt. The lords moved to aid the Regent.

I hope my address to the people combined with their lordships actions will give the good Regent the edge.

Then to unpleasant business; my heart weighing heavily as I walked to my new workshop. The chapel, whose stonework reflects the impressions of the chisels that honed it, was quiet. With the horn shaped candle and silver ‘hoof’ snuffer as my tools, I extracted Alaric from the bosom of the church.

The watchmaker removing the screw that is loose in the case lays it aside. Something in the mechanism that is me was laid aside. Compromised though he is, I refuse to accept that this part is beyond repair. One day I hope he can be replaced into the works. Then after conjuring some guardians I retired to bed.
