The Raggedy Man's Revenge

Extracts from the Personal Diary of Adam Walters: Reiki Healer & Gestalt Therapist

Recent Events

I have been working at the Wilmarth Facility in Broadmoor Prison on behalf of MI13. Last Friday I saw some familiar faces in the canteen area. Dr Eliza Jamieson, Dr Barbara Smythe and Dr Belinda Durham had come to visit Dr Toby Higginbotham. The next day I got a call from Belinda. She asked about Geoffrey Baxter's strange home-made binoculars. She drove me to Avebury in her large gas guzzling car.

We met up with a St John Cartwright Fiennes and his girlfriend Jules. We headed off to have a look at the Beckhampton Longbarrow. I explained to Belinda about the binoculars, that as well as the usual sliding controls there was one for looking back through time.

I tried to look back 6 months in time. I got a scare when I saw the Treadle creature staring at me. Its look was so malevolent my heart nearly froze. I had to break contact.

Belinda then had a go sliding the controls right back. She received a nasty stab wound to the abdomen! Later she told me that she had seen a caveman dressed in skins with a flint spear. I used my healing powers to give her a better chance of survival. She went to hospital.

Later on I stayed at Barbara parents' house. It was nice of them to let me stay. Barbara works for English Heritage. I had met her the day before.

In the morning I visited St John who told me of some suspicious activity in the woods. He had overheard someone with a Spanish accent talking to someone with a guttural voice and a local policeman who was involved with the “Children of Light”. They said something about helping Imelda. After this he heard what he thought might be the sound of them dragging a body. Naturally he was concerned for her welfare.

Hearing his girlfriend screaming he had dashed back to their van. She thought she had seen a local tramp, Hagrid, peering through the window. I agreed to go look for Hagrid.

Arriving at Hagrid's caravan we have a look around. St John spied a body under the vehicle. When the police arrive they were a little shaken by the sight of the body. I avoided looking at it.

We talked to the police. I received a phone call from a Hispanic gentleman named Rodriguez who offered me £50,000 for the binoculars! I don't know how he got my number. I declined despite being hard up. I did not trust the man.

In the evening we head off for Silbury Hill with Barbara. I got a feeling that the place was bleeding energy off the ley line.A mist came up that obscured the hill. I felt that it must be magical. We saw a figure throwing something into the barrow. The entrance to the shaft is locked up so we couldn't get in. Eliza met us at the bottom of the hill around midnight.

Monday 25th July

Barbara, Eliza, St John and I go up Silbury Hill. Barbara had gotten the keys from Swindon. I use Reiki to open myself to positive healing energies. I imagine them as a white and gold light beams coming down from above. I then use the energies to form a protective shield of energy around me. I imagine this as a sphere of white light which negative energies will bounce off. As always a mystical symbol is placed on the sphere to boost its effect. As I do so I feel a taint to the energy. It must be coming from nearby. I feel that if I concentrate on the taint I might be able to find its source. I do so. St John takes out his dowsing rods and starts to dowse for something. I’m too busy concentrating to tell what.

At the top of the hill we go into the fibreglass dome. There is a ladder going down. There is some discussion as to who should be the first to go down; I volunteer.

I climb down the ladder. Its quite a long way down – maybe 50 feet. To start with it is surrounded by expanded polystyrene. Then that starts to bell out away from the ladder. The ladder extends to within about 3 feet from the bottom. I’m sweating now with all the exertion and heat and humidity in the place.

Holding on to the ladder and using a maglite to look down I can see heavy footprints – probably from workmen. There is a metal plate on the ground. A yard away is another metal plate that has landed on its edge.

I hear the rustling sound of earth falling down behind the polystyrene. At the same time I feel an updraft of warm air. I also feel that the taint is coming from down below me. There seems to be a dynamic tension between the “bad” energy from below the ground and the “good” energy above. I notice a bad smell, which I associate with the Treadle beast.

Feeling a bit nervous I climb up the ladder. I’m sweating buckets by now and have to stop half way up to have a rest. I hear the sound of earth falling again so I head up the ladder. Going outside to recover, I drink some water to rehydrate myself.

St John climbs down the ladder to investigate. Later he heads back up. He is tired also and has to rest. I advise him to leave the metal plates in place because I have an inkling that they maybe stopping the foul thing below from coming up. Nearing the top he is exhausted and needs to wrap his arms around the ladder to stop himself from falling. Eliza is faffing around looking in her medical bag. I climb down and attempt to give him enough healing energy for him to climb back up. It is difficult to arrange myself on the ladder so that I can heal him but I manage it. Just as it is looking like he might fall I give him a boost. We head back up the ladder.

At the top he needs to rest and drink plenty of fluids. I use the Reiki Healing to revive myself since I'm still feeling tired. St John is exhausted and has been sweating buckets. Eliza tends to him – lucky man. She is quite beautiful. It's a shame that she is so cold and clinical.

The sun is high so there is not much shade to be had. We head down to have lunch in the Red Lion. St John smells a bit from all the sweating and is still damp so he heads home in order to change his clothes. I don't have a change of clothes so I'll just have to smell.

In the pub, on his return, St. John tells us that his girlfriend, Jules, has gone to meet Imelda for a meal at the Wagon & Horses. It's quite a posh place. He seems a little worried that it might be a trap. I suggest that he phones the place to check on Imelda or his girlfriend. He finds out that Jules is there and that there is a reservation for lunch made by Imelda. She is not there. We are glad when the food arrives. I have a meat pie and veg. It's lovely and much appreciated after our efforts.

After lunch we head to the hospital to visit Belinda. She tells me that her Doctor was surprised by how few bacteria were present in the wound. We agree that it was probably the Reiki Healing that had this effect. She has been lucky with the stab wound. It hadn't entered the peritoneum so she got off lightly.

We have a look at the bronze plaque. It's not the period Belinda or I studied but she recognised it as being a corner of a plaque that was stolen from the Louvre in Paris. She sends a picture of the hieroglyphics to an Egyptologist friend of hers. We agree to pick Belinda up from hospital at 11am the following morning.

Eliza and I plan to do some research at MI13 HQ. We ring but find out that its likely to be shut if we go today. We figure that the research will probably take a few days so we stay at Eliza's flat in Reading. Eliza fixes us a meal and we decide to have an early night. Night, night! Sleep tight! Don't let the bedbugs bite! – as my mother used to say.

Eliza wakes me in the night and tells me that she has to do an autopsy for MI13. I fall back asleep.

Wednesday 26th July

I was dreaming of butterflies in a summer's meadow when I am rudely awoken by a call from MI13. Its 4am! I am asked to go to the aid of Eliza. She is at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon. I have to get a cab and it's not cheap either. I get a receipt from the driver. I mustn't loose it.

Belinda describes how the hospital porter attacked her in her hospital bed. Eliza fills me in on some details too. A nurse and Eliza attacked the porter. Eliza swung a chair at the porter, decapitating him. The light came on. He then proceeded to jump out of a 3rd story window and run off into the night! Eliza informs me that this was probably the Treadle creature. Both Belinda and Eliza look shaken so I provide some healing. They look a bit better afterwards.

We are questioned by Special Branch. Afterwards Eliza heads off bringing back St John. He proceeds to dowse for the creature. We track it to a pond in the hospital grounds. We buy an inflatable dingy so that St John can search for the creature there. We suspect that it is long gone but we want to make certain.

I have an idea. Maybe I can use the binoculars to see if the creature came here? I take Belinda off some way to a place behind some trees where I use salt to make a Circle of Protection. She lends her will to the effort boosting its efficacy. Looking through the binoculars I merely see a fog. I cut my finger on the barb to re attune myself to it. I feel a little drained afterwards. I try a few settings but it's just hit and miss. Or in this case just miss. Before I clear away the salt Belinda wants to have a go with the binoculars. She pricks her fingers and looks a little faint. At the same time I feel my connection to the binoculars had diminished. She has a bit of a play with them before giving up.

We are to be debriefed at MI13. Dame Ursula Howard Fiennes – C – debriefs Eliza and me. She is in her 50s and looks stern behind her desk. She wants to know exactly what has been going on in Swindon and Avebury. We tell her that a Shoggoth has been sighted in both locations. She is not so sure that it is a Shoggoth. The clinching argument is that it has been decapitating and eviscerating its victims. Apparently it is nearly impervious to normal weapons. We need a team of occult specialists. It looks like we are to be the team. Mavis Enderby the bag lady is the current expert. We are told to seek her out. Meanwhile Belinda is being debriefed in another room and persuaded to join MI13. Earlier she had told us that the plaque had the name Djehuti on it. Apparently it's an ancient name of the God Thoth.

Thursday 27th July:

Arriving at the flat of Mavis Enderby, we are surprised to find her in. We tell her our visit is regarding the raggedy man. She beckons us inside. We regret it almost immediately. I sit on a damp patch on the sofa. The carpet is infested with fleas and we are bitten many times. Despite the squalor she has some neo modern sculptures. We recognise them as having connections with the Mythos but we aren't familiar with them though. She is clearly a bit mad and hasn't washed for some time. She talks of the Squdgicum-Squees. They are a bit like flies. They secrete liquids that digest their victims. They then absorb them. They take over people's skins and assume their identities. We agree to learn some spells. I succeed in learning the spell to summon Shoggoths and Eliza learns the spell to bind them. One day we hear some buzzing from high up in the building. We naturally assume it must be some power lines. During the week we get some nasty flea bites.

Thursday 3rd August

I see a news report. Sue Mornington's body has been found. She was a nurse who had been missing for a few days. She was found in the bushes. The front page has the headline – “Disturbance in Royal Berkshire Hospital”. A killer has been stalking the hospital. The creature accosted several members of staff. It asked for Eliza by name.
